Description:

Eygalières is one of the pretty villages located near Les Baux and St. Rémy in the Bouches du Rhône region of France. It has a nice selection of shops and cafes and a good outdoor market once a week. Our apartment is located in the old section of the village which is at the top of the small hill and was originally a fortifed citadelle. The French owner has renovated the ground floor of his summer home to provide a stylish and comfortable small apartment perfect for a couple and also perhaps one child.

The house opens to a small square --the only accommodation that does so, making this an almost private place where there is a table and chairs for outdoor meals with a rather impressive view of the Alpilles in the distance. As this "place" is well above the main village, it is hardly used by anyone else. The architecture of the building is of interest with even a turret that was originally a dungeon in the neighbor's portion beyond.

The main room has vaulted ceilings and a pretty open fireplace(decorative only) with the original horses' trough cut into the back stone wall. A queen sized bed is against one wall set on an attractive sea grass rug. There is a pretty wooden bar and an antique cupboard. An impressive African scuplture is set in a illuminated niche, and there is an original oil painting on the back wall. In the front of the room, facing the double French doors to the square, are two comfortable sofas. There is recessed lighting, and the entire room is decorated in beige and pale brown, making for a very calm and elegant style.

A door leads to the other room which is the dining room with an original monastery table and 10 chairs--each with an enamel number on its back.. indicative of the nun who was to sit in each! This table faces another attractive open fireplace with some lovely pencil sketches on the mantel above. The dining room also has a door to the square and similarly has vaulted ceilings. In the back of the dining room is a door leading to the kitchen and bathroom also with vaulted ceilings. The kitchen has white cupboards and a 3-burner halogen stove top, oven and is well-equipped. The bathroom is off this room and has a shower stall, sink and toilet. It is small, but nice.

All told, the apartment provides a real sense of going back in time, while being very attractive and comfortable. The little square in front is quite pretty and makes a wonderful spot for enjoying meals outdoors. A neighbor lives in the apartment on the other side and may cross in front when in residence. It's a short walk down the street to the main part of the village. This is a great property for clients who want a lovely view, the convenience of being in a village, and a stylish property, great for just 2.
