Description:

Vaison la Romaine is a wonderful town in the Vaucluse with significant Roman ruins and a fully intact Roman amphitheater. In addition to the main town, there is a separate medieval city located on a hilltop across the river. The modern town has an outdoor market that is famous throughout Provence, and the town square is lively with a wonderful selection of food shops, cafes, and restaurants.

This charming house, one of 2 by the same owner, is located below the medieval cité or Haute Ville in a pleasant, countrified setting with vines beyond it. It is on the edge of a small lane across which is the rock face and the castle above. Looking up, it's a pretty view. The owner used to run a well-known B&B nearby and has applied her considerable talent to furnishing and landscaping the house to a charming standard.

The ground floor has an open kitchen that is well-equpped and opens to the dining area. A toilet is located off the entry door. Across from the dining table, French doors open to the patio and garden. The living room is quite pretty and is decorated in shades of grey with chocolate brown chairs, a beige sofa and matching curtains. This room has high ceilings, an exposed beam and two sets of French doors that open to the patio and pool. The view past the pool is of open country. The pool is open April 1 - October 30, but is not heated.

Upstairs are three bedrooms. There are 2 queen bedrooms both decorated with good linens and matching floral curtains. The third bedroom has 2 sets of bunk beds. There is a bathroom with a bathtub, hand shower and sink. And another bathroom with a shower only. One separate toilet.

A path leads to the other property and thus both houses could be rented together if desired. See PR005 for more details. There is excellent privacy if they are rented alone.

Location Information:

1km to Vaison most facilities, weekly market, Roman ruins; 200m medieval city, restaurants, shops, 60km N of Avignon all facilities, high speed train.

Vaison la Romaine is a wonderful town at the northern end of the Dentelles mountains range. It has much to offer. The weekly market draws people from the region. In summer the town hosts a well-known music festival where concerts are held in different venues around the city: the theater, the ruins, the church in the medieval city. From here all the famous Côte du Rhône vineyards are close by. There are many charming villages to visit. It is an ideal location for hiking and biking as well. The entire Vaucluse area has lots to offer with Orange and Carpentras both close by. Click here to learn more about the attractions of: Provence

Client Comments:

"These were the most gracious hosts we've encountered in all of our travels. The house was scrupulously clean, nicely organized, beautifully located just below the medieval city and fit our needs better than any place we've ever stayed. Charming village, very good restaurants, best and most extensive Roman ruins in France. In short, wonderful!"
-Charles D., San Diego, CA
