Description:

This beautifully renovated townhouse offers Provencal elegance and is ideal for someone who would like to manage without a car. It is located right in the heart of Arles with a view of the magnificent Roman arena across. There is so much to see and do in the city, that one could spend an entire week right here. Van Gogh lived and painted in Arles, and many of his most famous paintings capture the beauty of the city and surrounding countryside. There is a walking tour of the locations of his paintings. The city is famous for its many Roman monuments including the arena, which hosts several famous festivals during the year. The Musée Arlaten was founded by Fréderic Mistral a hundred years ago and documents Provence history. In season, there are many performances including opera in the antique theater, music in small clubs and many art galleries. The regular outdoor market is lively and colorful, and there is an excellent selection of both elegant and simple restaurants. And with a car, this location gives easy access to the Camargue with its broad sandy beaches, tall grasses, white horses and flamingoes. Nearby are many charming villages including the famous perched Les Baux.

The origins of this lovely townhouse date from Roman times with the entire house completed in the 14th century! Recently renovated, it has been entirely restored and decorated with an eye to charm and authenticity, using Provencal colors and antiques. The living room/dining room is on the ground floor with exposed stone walls, high ceilings, French doors, and the original stone floor. A comfortable sofa opens to a queen bed. There is a dining table and seating for 4. The kitchenette, best for breakfast and snacks, is in a niche with a 2-burner stove, combination oven/microwave, and small refrigerator. In the basement are a large refrigerator/freezer, laundry facilities and guest sink and toilet. From the entry level, stone stairs lead upstairs to the second and third floors with two master bedrooms. Each has a queen bed in an antique four-poster frame, large windows, and open bath area with claw-foot bathtub, sink and separate, enclosed toilet. From these windows there is a striking view of the arena across. Both rooms have exposed beams, antique tile floors, stone walls, and elegant bed linens. There is air conditioning installed in all rooms except the basement which makes this house especially pleasant in summer months. This is a beautiful and romantic house.

Client Comments:

Great facility, great locatoin, loved it. I may come back next year with another couple. Felt like we actually lived in Arles. Had 2 bakeries and a little grocery just a block or two away.

We could not have been more pleased with our stay. Comfortable, gorgeously decorated and clearly well-maintained. We made firend with the neighbors and felt right at home from the start. A great location, too! Small kitchen was just right. Fabulous bathtubs and good water supply. Fantastic view!
